There is a world of difference between working with curly hair and working with straight hair. The techniques that are utilized vary greatly, depending on the curliness or straightness of the hair. But what makes the hair curly or straight? Hair texture is hereditary in most cases, although it is possible for curly-haired parents to have a child with poker-straight hair. The degree of curl depends largely on the shape of the follicle, or the pore from out of which the hair grows. A round follicle will produce straight hair. A follicle that is oval in shape will produce wavy hair. Curly hair occurs when the shape of the follicle is flat.

Cutting curly hair requires a greater degree of skill than cutting straight hair, in my opinion. The problem lies in the fact that when curly hair is wet it lengthens considerably. That means however you cut the hair when it is wet, it will always “shrink” when it is dry. This is true with all hair, but more visible with hair that is curly. Another challenge when cutting curly hair is getting it to lay right. Curly hair often has a propensity to stick out when cut incorrectly. To avoid this, I never cut in the typical straight-across manner. Instead, I use a technique called “notching”. When you notch the hair, you get a softer edge, similar to the result you get with a razor cut. Both notching and razor-cutting work well on wavy and curly hair because they don’t leave a blunt edge on the hair.jt Continue reading »

tips-for-your-hair

1. “I find that if I use a silk scarf, my ends remain nicer. Of course, who wants to go and spend thirty bucks on a scarf for your head? I find silk shirts for under a dollar at the thrift shop, and cut to fit. It works!”
2. “Use Hot olive oil as a hot oil treatment.”
3. “I have some kind of kinky, curly, wavy hair. That’s what I call it and I know that lots of black people have heard the myth about not washing your hair everyday; but for me I decided to do that because I was using glue for my weaves and I just did that because I like to be different from others and look different and change my look. Well, my hair was coming out from constantly putting waves in back to back. My friend and I talked one day about how often black people’s hair should be washed. I told her that I’ll try it and see if my hair would be healthier and thicker and longer. I thoroughly checked my hair every single day and washed and conditioned it too. It certainly did grow. Now I don’t mean it grew 6 inches in one week; but it grew and made my hair very healthy and thicker (used hair thickner shampoo) and longer. I’m not saying it’ll work for every black person and I know that people don’t have time or just don’t want to wash their hair everyday; but it may be what someone out there is looking for and it may be worth a try. I’m not sure….I don’t think it will take someone’s hair out though.”
4. “If you use conditioner, the best time to detangle and is when the conditioner is in your hair.  Use a wide tooth comb.  No need to detangle again after you wash the conditioner out.  Trust me, this really works.”
5. ” I always thought I had to use a conditioner in a jar.  But I found my hair would become so manageable (using my fingers as a comb) when I used the shampoo and matching conditioners that seemed to be marketed for hair types other than afro-hair.  After this I put in a heavy gel and slick my hair back.  If it rains I don’t worry I can go to the beach/pool and not worry about getting my hair wet as I used to.”
6. “I am not a hair stylist –but my hair would be so tangly even after a good conditioner.  When I worked in a salon- I tried a detangler and it really works.  I never thought to use them because I thought they were not for “us”.  I suffered all those years for no reason.”

The easiest thing to do with long, straight hair is to just brush it. After you take your morning shower, blow dry your hair and brush all the tangles out. (Don’t air dry because this can often make your hair puffy and frizzy all day). Use some hairspray to keep your hair in place (light or medium hold, a maximum hold can often make your hair too stiff).

If you have lots of hair, I would strongly advise against putting it up in a ponytail because your hair will hurt when you let it back down. (Trust me, I know!) Ponytails are great ideas if you don’t have as much hair.

Another good option for any type of hair is putting it into pigtails. Part in the middle and braid the two parts. Make sure you use hairspray to keep it in place. This way, your hair won’t completely fall apart by the end of the day. (Sometimes those stupid little hairs can fall out, and hairspray will keep those in check!) Pigtails are easy, simple, and quick. You just need 5-10 minutes. It’s also really cute on girls!

A tip for getting haircuts: layers! Layers look good on girls with longer hair. You can curl the shorter sections of hair towards your face, really framing it and making you look gorgeous!

If you have long wavy hair, work with your hair to enhance its look. You can add bounce and texture to curls using various hair products–including mousse, hairspray. You can also use curling irons to enhance your natural curls. After you get out of the shower, let your hair air dry and see what happens. Continue reading »

Curly Hairstyles

A Hair: Long, straight and thick. Unable to wrap except with a special iron and lots of hairspray, so they are very natural to flat, stiff and formless. No shampoo hair daily becoming more bold, and only the foam gives them some volume.

B Hair: Hair thin, flat

  • These hairs are found in Asians. Very difficult to style, they do not take the cuts, even with gel or hairspray. As type A, this type of hair should be washed every day or they will become fat and ugly. Continue reading »

medium-length

Well, here’s the thing (and I’m probably not telling you anything you don’t already know): It’s hard to have curly hair. Especially in times like these, when all of the styles shown are essentially for people with the stick-straightest of hair.

So, short of getting your hair chemically straightened (which, incidentally, a friend of mine did recently — and it looks healthy and great), what’s a gal like you to do? Accept your curls, and let your hair grow long. Of course, it depends on exactly how curly your hair is, but since longer hair weighs more, it tends to pull the curl out a bit and give you those incredible Andie MacDowell/Julia Louis-Dreyfus ringlets. The other thing that makes curly hair look its best is to layer it a bit in the front so it doesn’t just hang. Continue reading »

It took me like that, from morning to night, a desire for radical change. Tired of seeing my face in the mirror, I thought I was going to cut everything and once I had made my decision, not make me change my mind.

This is my husband who was not very reassured at the thought of the shingle. He loves my wavy hair, a little crazy and my bangs right. It was he who insisted that I keep the fringe. Continue reading »

Like brushing your hair! Save money on expensive treatments at the salon. This battery-operated hair coloring brush distributes color evenly and with root-to-tip precision.
Okay, you’ve tried this and that, and what we really want are super easy fast ways to do your hair. But still look good of course. A lot is in the hair product used, (ever used the hairspray that turned your hair into glue? You know what I mean.) And a lot is in how you do it. Well, we thought w’d give you tricks of the trade. You know, the way your hairdresser does it. Fast, simple, effortless.

What DOES he know that you DON’T?

afro hairWell, first off, get to know your HAIR TEXTURE and what it will and won’t do. Is it curly, straight or wavy? Is it kinky? Is it thin, full, in-between? Is it short, medium, long? (THAT’s an easy one.) Make a mental list of all the things your hair will do on its own without any help from you. A lot of “too-hard” hairstyles are from trying to get your hair to do something it simply will not. Continue reading »

Stress-Proof Summer Hair

If summer is stressing out your hair — frequent frizz, limp locks, split ends — you can combat the heat and humidity with these tips from L.A. stylist Michelle Jonietz. “Summer is by far the worst season for hair,” the owner of the posh L Salon says. “Our clients are always complaining that their hair becomes schizophrenic the minute the temperatures climb.”

But, she insists, there are steps you can take to stress-proof your crowning glory. “Summer doesn’t have to be a hair emergency,” she says. Follow her professional advice and your coif will look cool even on the most scorching days.

Stress-Proof Summer Hair

Problem: Humidity makes your curls go crazy.
Solution: Oil-based products that keep hair under control.
“I hear it all the time, ‘Help, Michelle, my hair looks like I stuck my finger in an electrical socket!’” Jonietz says. “You need to use a styling product that repels humidity and acts as a barrier between your hair and the elements.” She recommends rubbing a dime-sized drop of anti-humectant pommade or oil-based anti-frizz gel into ringlets. “Start at the ends — they need it the most — and work your way up,” she explains.

Beat the Heat

Problem: Heat makes it impossible to set things straight.
Solution: Let it be — naturally.

naturally wavy hair
“Many women with naturally wavy hair use a blowdryer to straighten it all year long,” says Joneitz. “Then comes hot weather, and all your styling efforts disappear the minute you walk out the door.” Instead of working yourself into a sweat over styling, let your hair do what it will, she suggests. “Just spray in a light leave-in conditioner, and don’t touch your hair with a comb or brush,” she says. “Let it air-dry then run fingers through once or twice. The look is soft, sexy and oh-so-simple!”

Problem: Chlorine and salt dry and fry.
Solution: Beware — and take care.
“Before you dive into the pool, wet your hair with a spray bottle of water and comb through a heavy, waxy conditioner,” says Jonietz. Now, when you take the plunge, you’re protected from all those chemicals. “The conditioner acts as a shield, preventing hair from absorbing chlorine or salt which can dry and damage it.” Use a deep-conditioning hair mask once a week and a light conditioner daily. “Look for ones that replenish moisture as well as add protein to strengthen,” she advises.

Let Hair Shine

Problem: Locks look lackluster.
Solution: Products that step up shine.
“Hair can look dry and brittle in summer — almost parched from the sun and water,” Jonietz says. Moisturizers (see above) are your best bet to repair the damage, but in the meantime, you can fake it with a shine-enhancer. “Rub an oil-based laminate into ends,” Jonietz says. “A little — about the size of a dime — will go a long way if you smooth it first between palms.” A spray-on shine enhancer also works wonders. “It coats hair, seals ends, makes hair shimmer and reflects light.”

Problem: Hair falls flat.
Solution: Products with alcohol offer a pick-me-up.
“When you perspire in the heat, your hair becomes oily,” Jonietz says. “It can look stringy instead of your normal bounce and body.” The culprit may also be the oil-based styling product you’re using. “Adding oil to oil is a disaster!” she says. “If you must, use just a dab and only on the ends. Your scalp probably doesn’t need any more.”

Jonietz also suggests switching to an alcohol-based styler — even a hairspray — to absorb the excess oils. “In general, if your hair is limp, then less is more,” she says. “The less you put in your hair, the less weighed down it will be.”

Tame Your Bangs

  • Stress-Proof Summer Hair
  • Beat the Heat
  • Let Hair Shine
  • Tame Your Bangs

Problem: Bangs are causing breakouts.
Solution: Sweep ‘em to the side.
Don’t sweat over bangs that seem to be causing skin irritations. “Again, it’s the oil build-up from perspiration,” says Jonietz. “Your bangs are depositing oil on your skin, clogging pores and causing blemishes.” Simply comb bangs back to the side (a side-part is so chic, she says). A pretty bobby pin (rosebuds and rhinestones are hot) keeps them in place. “Not only will your complexion improve but you’ll feel cooler and cleaner.”

Problem: I’ve tried everything and my hair still won’t behave.
Solution: Get creative with accessories!
“There are so many adorable options out there!” insists Jonietz. “Barrettes, combs, clips, headbands all camouflage bad hair days — go for it!” Her favorite look (and one that she uses on celeb clients Lara Flynn Boyle and Pamela Anderson) is a chignon secured with chopsticks. “Comb hair back and off the face and secure with a covered elastic into a low ponytail,” she says. “Twist hair loosely into a knot and hold in place with a pair of chopsticks. What could be cooler?”

If you are blessed with naturally curly hair or naturally wavy hair then you are fortunate indeed, here are some black hair care tips to grow your hair fast. :-)

Shampooing

Pick a shampoo and conditioner that are moisturizing and preferably ones that are designed for curly hair. Make sure to rinse your hair thoroughly. Follow with a leave-in-conditioner. Leave-in conditioner is a must for curly hair. Due to the fact that this type of conditioner stays in the hair, it is excellent when it comes to managing the frizzies. Continue reading »

Brushes come in a wide range of shapes and with several different bristle materials and types. Traditional brushes have close-set bristles made of nylon, plastic or wild boar hair. Natural boar bristles are softer and more pliable, so they’re gentler on your hair and scalp, and don’t usually cause breakage or other damage. They also help distribute the hair’s natural oils, create healthy shine and reduce static. (Tip: If you have lots of static electricity in your hair, spritz your brush with a little hair spray and brush from the roots to the ends to tame flyaways.)
Brushes with fat, widely spaced bristles are also available, usually with plastic, flexible metal or wooden bristles; make sure the bristles have rounded tips so you don’t scratch your scalp. Some brushes have bristles attached directly to a plastic or wooden handle; others have bristles set into a rubber or plastic cushion or a metal cylinder.
