The simple fact is that cheaper products tend to be harder on your hair and scalp. You don’t need to buy the most expensive to be good to yourself. Here are some of the products that I tend to like. Click pictures for more information.

Biolage Shampoos and Conditioners made by Matrix

Matrix has been around forever. Their products rock! The shampoo cleans without stripping necessary oils and nutrients. The conditioner is light, virtually no build up. Used together, you can almost never go wrong. Continue reading »

versatility-braid

The manageability of a natural with the versatility of a braid.

  • The relaxed hair is gone; you even wore a short natural for a while.  But now it’s getting longer…
  • You decided to trim away the relaxed hair gradually and now you’re in that in-between stage dealing with two different textures…

What do you do with it?  Twist it!

What’s so great about it?
If your hair has graduated from the afro, you may be clueless as to what to do with it.  Your wash-n-go days are pretty much over.  Twists make dealing with the kinkiest, curliest hair relatively easy.  You don’t have to retwist every day; it’s possible for some twists to last up to 3 weeks or so.  And if you’re thinking about locking, twists give you a general idea of what to expect.

If your hair is at the half-way mark but you can’t bear to part with the straight ends just yet, you may be having a touch time making to two textures blend.  Twists add texture, style, and help “disguise” that line where kinky and straight hair meet.

Doing the Twist
The best time to do any styling is right after a good shampoo, but can mist your hair lightly with water if you want.

  • Kinky hair: twist while damp or dry, but you’ll have two different results. Dry twists may not last as long and may unravel.
  • Straight hair with kinky roots:  twist while damp; the straight hair will set better this way.

Taking a one-inch square section of hair, divide the section into two parts.  Starting at the scalp, entwine one part around the other and twist down until you reach the end of the section.  Roll the end of the twist between your thumb and forefinger to create a coil that keep the twist together.  You probably won’t need it, but a light gel or setting lotion can be applied either before or after twisting.

Once you get the hang of it, you can experiment with zig-zag or diamond partings.  Just be sure to make each section roughly the same size.

Pay attention to:
-Your hair partings. It’s similar with braids: if the partings aren’t neat, even, and uniform, they’ll show up, and not in a good way.
-Remove all tangles so your twist will be smooth and without “lumps.”

What can be done with a twist?
Anything you can do with a braid, you can do with a twist.  Set them on rollers. Twists them around themselves to form knots which you can then wear as it or undo to get a “crinkly” effect.  You can even twists them around other twists.  Or you can leave them alone and just let them hang.

The easiest thing to do with long, straight hair is to just brush it. After you take your morning shower, blow dry your hair and brush all the tangles out. (Don’t air dry because this can often make your hair puffy and frizzy all day). Use some hairspray to keep your hair in place (light or medium hold, a maximum hold can often make your hair too stiff).

If you have lots of hair, I would strongly advise against putting it up in a ponytail because your hair will hurt when you let it back down. (Trust me, I know!) Ponytails are great ideas if you don’t have as much hair.

Another good option for any type of hair is putting it into pigtails. Part in the middle and braid the two parts. Make sure you use hairspray to keep it in place. This way, your hair won’t completely fall apart by the end of the day. (Sometimes those stupid little hairs can fall out, and hairspray will keep those in check!) Pigtails are easy, simple, and quick. You just need 5-10 minutes. It’s also really cute on girls!

A tip for getting haircuts: layers! Layers look good on girls with longer hair. You can curl the shorter sections of hair towards your face, really framing it and making you look gorgeous!

If you have long wavy hair, work with your hair to enhance its look. You can add bounce and texture to curls using various hair products–including mousse, hairspray. You can also use curling irons to enhance your natural curls. After you get out of the shower, let your hair air dry and see what happens. Continue reading »

For years there have been the stylists that have a magic gift. This remarkable gift to just “know” what your new hairstyle should be without explanation or effort. Everyone would love to find one of these stylists but they seem to be so rare. So for those of us without the magical ways of a wonder stylist , we must resort to conveying our desired new hair, personally. In order to do this effectively and not leave disappointed, there are some general guidelines. Continue reading »

Hair Styles With Texture.

I have been cutting hair for a long time so I now know what cut works best with almost every hair type. (There are still some types of hair with nasty little patterns from mother nature that I can not tame without mass quantities of products). I love cutting hair that is medium in texture with a slight wave and is healthy and responsive. Of course not everyone has this utopian hair that I dream about and love so much, so for everyone else with just regular hair or maybe not so great hair, here are some suggestions about haircutting. The razor can take on many styles and has equally as many uses for haircutting. There are many actions or results that the razor can produce.

Texture for body and volume.

Removing weight for movement and manageability.

Softening of the hair and style.

Creative freedom for the stylist to carve out the cut.

The best hair for razor cutting is medium to coarse hair either straight or with wave is fine too. I have found in my hair cutting adventures that my best razor cuts are mostly on these hair types although there are many stylist that would argue for the other hair types that they have dominated with the razor as well. Always consult with an experienced stylist about your individual hair needs. Continue reading »

Most clients’ bangs grow out before the haircut does causing them tress duress. I like to show my clients how to do a home bang trim so they don’t butcher them. First I comb down the entire bang section, making sure to get all of the hair that is meant to be the bangs. Do this on dry hair only because wet hair will shrink when dry making the bangs much shorter than desired. Take each side of the bangs at the corners and gather them to the middle pinching them at the bridge of the nose. You now have a small point of hair that is the entire bang section that can be cut in one straight across small clip. Cut at the level of the bridge of the nose, any higher than this level may leave the hair too short. The bangs will fall longer at the sides of the face and slightly shorter in the center. I find this arching shape to be more pleasing than the straight across line look. For added texture and softness to the ends you can point cut an 1/8″ up to ½” into the ends closing the scissors as you pull away from the ends. This quick fix works well with practice and will get you through until you see your stylist again.

Hair can make or break an outfit. For some people (myself included), it has a major impact on how you feel about your appearance. A bad hair day might ruin your whole day. Well, I am sure other things might contribute to that bad day too, but you know where I am going with this! The problem with hair is that it can take a lot of time to do or you might get stuck wearing the same style everyday. If you want to try an easy style that is almost guaranteed to get a lot of compliments, test out my tips to scrunch your hair. And when I say scrunch, I do not want you to come out having hard or “crispy crunchy” looking curls. Depending on the texture of your hair, I want you to either come out having natural looking curls or waves that actually move!

I’m thinking about getting my hair streaked, and if I do, I’m going to have it done so that it looks natural. But before I do this, just what exactly goes into the process of streaking? Will it damage my hair?
Answer-
Bleach, my dear. Bleach is what goes into the process of streaking.

Now, I’m not going to lie to you and tell you that the process will not damage your hair, because well, that would just be dishonest. But don’t think it means I am discouraging you from getting streaks. Far from it.

Most hair can withstand a little torture (heck, just blow-drying every day damages your hair). And usually, it takes a double or triple process to really make any difference to the texture of your hair. A multi-step process involves dyeing your hair and then highlighting on top of that (or dyeing, highlighting and, God forbid, perming on top of both.) Continue reading »

U no peculiar smell which can put off. Fragrant for some, disagreeable to others, its fragrance can not be ignored. But rest assured the smell is not very pronounced, at least not enough to embalm (or stink, subjectivity requires) a piece. Personally, I find it intoxicating to the point of having developed a really Obsessive Com-pulsing which is to sniff the oil before each use.

S for thinner texture. Disconcerting at first use, but you end up getting done (or not!). One thing is sure: fans of castor oil are easily able to appreciate it.

R isk to bear comparison with the traditional oil carapate, manufactured in the West Indies (for those having already tested). Purists prefer the traditional version straight out of the West Indies.

The world of hairpieces and artificial is studied in Characterization and this is as great help at the moment of a personage characterizes.

The word hairpieces, “postizos” as a French word is in the habit of describing any work of hair. The products are in the habit of being so small as false eyelashes or as big as a wig.

Hairpieces are surfaces of changeable size, which are in use when the hair is scanty or the length and texture of the hair do not allow to do a concrete hairdo.

young girl with a great shoulder length hair styleThis picture shows off a young girl with a great shoulder length hair style.  She is wearing hair to mid shoulder length and its colored a great shade of black-brown, which shows off her skin tone and her lovely brown eyes.  To get this style hair would work best if thinner to medium-thin in texture and longer than shoulder length.  Have stylist cut into a longer modern version of the classic shag cut, color a darker shade if natural hair color is lighter. Color is the key to rocking this cut, roll hair on extra large Velcro rollers and dry.  Tease lightly and spray for extra hold to finish. Continue reading »

Short-Hairstyles-for-Men2

Wear it close-cropped, or in a texturized ear-length shag, but please-no ponytails!
“Long hair is so over,” says Brian Phillips, owner of Toronto’s World Salon. “It’s very tired looking and there is absolutely nothing modern about it.”
What is happening, Phillips says, is short hair, ranging from army buzz cuts to messy Johnny Deppe styles. Hair is “angry, rough and uncomplicated” and should appear totally unpretentious-as if you simply washed it, gave it a light ruffle and scampered out the door. These sexy, undone styles require a great cut to keep them swinging.
“We have developed a really cool cutting technique, here at World, called ‘The Toronado’,” Phillips enthuses. “It consists of dividing hair into small sections, then twisting them and heavily texturizing each section, on the ends, with shears. The result is great movement, energy and texture.”
To take texture to the extreme, Richard Hyams, director of Suki’s Academy in Vancouver, British Columbia, suggests experimenting with perming techniques.
“This season we are seeing a lot of strong textural barbering incorporating multi-textural perming techniques, Hyams says. “I recommend using freehand cutting through the internal lengths to give hair a fresh edge.” Continue reading »

Screen siren Raquel Welch recently launched a funky line of wigs which feature touchable texture, cool ventilation and a snug, custom fit.
When I was in New York last year doing the musical ‘Victor/Victoria’ I liked looking pulled together when leaving the theatre each night,” explains Welch, who recently launched the Raquel Welch Collection of wigs with Celebrity Signature International, based in Kansas City, Missouri. “I found pulling a wig on was just the ticket-I was able to look great for the crowds and cameras waiting for me after an exhausting performance.”
Welch’s line features 18 wigs and four hairpieces, available in 39 colours, including five funky highlighted shades. Prices range from $170 to $400 for one of the synthetic creations, which Welch claims will not frizz or fade, and looks and feels exactly like human hair. Each wig comes with a “Memory Cap,” a thin, light-weight fabric that conforms to the head and memorizes its shape, creating a customized fit. Continue reading »

“When your hair is 98% dry, the cool air setting provides the finishing touch to lock in the desired style and add shine to the hair. Cold air causes the cuticle layer on hair to contract, so it seals the hair and produces shine. It doesn’t work if hair is too wet, though.

“And remember that the worst damage to your hair isn’t necessarily from the heat of the dryer, but from stretching and pulling your hair when it’s wet and weak. So go ahead and use the warm setting — but be gentle — and then finish with cool.”

Pre-dry. Working with hair that is dripping wet can make the drying process twice as long. Instead, place your hair in a towel or let it air-dry before turning on the blow-dryer. “Most people don’t realize that hair won’t do anything until it’s 80% dry,” Monahan says. Consider making it the last thing you do in the morning. By the time you’ve had breakfast and put on your makeup, your hair will be ready to style.

Personal Hair Advisor:
Lighten Too-Dark Haircolor

Personal Hair Advisor: You might have heard your stylist say that color can’t lift color, meaning once you put a color on your hair, you can’t use another color to try and make your hair lighter. Tint isn’t designed to do that. You’ll have to resort to some kind of decolorizer or bleach to lift out the color. And that’s something you should definitely let a colorist do for you.

Personal Hair Advisor:
Choosing a Haircolor

Personal Hair Advisor: When you are on a quest for the perfect hair color, there are two things you must take into consideration: the type of color that is best for your hair and the shade that will best complement your skin tone.

The two main types of hair color are permanent and semi-permanent. Permanent color is the only color that can cover gray. If your hair is more than 30 percent gray and your primary motivation for coloring it is to cover the gray, permanent color is your best option. Many people shy away from permanent color because they are afraid it will cause serious damage to their hair. But with the improved formulations most products have today, this is very unlikely. In fact, permanent color can actually make gray hair less wiry and can create a smoother, softer texture. Continue reading »

People perceive women wearing tousled short hairstyles (think Meg Ryan) to be confident and outgoing according to the First Impressions and Hair Impressions study carried out at Yale University by Dr Marianne La France.

Short hairstyles – Things to consider
The most important thing to consider with a short hairstyle is the upkeep. Short hair needs to be trimmed every 4-6 weeks to keep it looking its best.

Texturizing Hair
Apply a small amount of mousse (or styling balm or gel) evenly through partially dried hair to create volume and texture. Working from the underneath of the hair use your fingers to lift, tease and tousle the hair as you blow dry. Select small sections of hair, use your fingers to scrunch and apply heat. Direct the airflow of the dryer from the ends of your hair towards the roots to maximize fullness. If you prefer, you can use a dryer with a finger diffuser to give even more tousle. You can also use a small curling iron to touch up the ends if you wish. Then work molding or styling paste through with your fingers to create texture. Avoid using combs or brushes on the finished style to maintain absolute tousle.

Sick of leaving the salon less-than-thrilled about your hair cut? These tips will help.

1. Sit up straight for your haircut
Don’t cross your legs when you sit in the stylist’s chair — it skews your posture, so your hair cut could be uneven once you stand up. Instead, sit up in the chair, legs uncrossed.

2. Collect hairstyle pictures
The biggest hair disasters arise when your stylist doesn’t understand what you want. Hairstyle pictures will help convey your message.

3. But be realistic
You may love a haircut on a magazine model, but if your hair is not the same texture or your face is not the same shape as hers, the haircut won’t look the same on you. Ask your stylist for variations appropriate to you.

4. Soften a square jawline with layers
Keep them long and choppy around the lower half of your face. Continue reading »
