I remember, for years, when I was growing up putting towels on my head, pretending I had long straight hair. I remember for years, refusing to look at the sight of my hair after it had been washed and shrunk; and, I remember for years watching others’ hair bounce and flow, into the radiance of the sun, and then look at my own twisted mess. Why was it my curse to have short hair why? Was it my curse to have “black hair?” Why couldn’t I be mixed or SOMETHNG to dilute the napps so prevalent on my scalp? I relaxed and pressed, and stroked my hair until it begged for mercy, or just fell out of my head, and still I continued.

One day my cousin suggested I go natural. Natural? What did that mean, but to go ugly. Did she not realize that the fate of the world depended on the fact that my hair be “fried, died, and laid to the side”? She must be joking. But, as each month passed and I looked into the mirror, I was never satisfied with what I saw looking back at me. Continue reading »

versatility-braid

The manageability of a natural with the versatility of a braid.

  • The relaxed hair is gone; you even wore a short natural for a while.  But now it’s getting longer…
  • You decided to trim away the relaxed hair gradually and now you’re in that in-between stage dealing with two different textures…

What do you do with it?  Twist it!

What’s so great about it?
If your hair has graduated from the afro, you may be clueless as to what to do with it.  Your wash-n-go days are pretty much over.  Twists make dealing with the kinkiest, curliest hair relatively easy.  You don’t have to retwist every day; it’s possible for some twists to last up to 3 weeks or so.  And if you’re thinking about locking, twists give you a general idea of what to expect.

If your hair is at the half-way mark but you can’t bear to part with the straight ends just yet, you may be having a touch time making to two textures blend.  Twists add texture, style, and help “disguise” that line where kinky and straight hair meet.

Doing the Twist
The best time to do any styling is right after a good shampoo, but can mist your hair lightly with water if you want.

  • Kinky hair: twist while damp or dry, but you’ll have two different results. Dry twists may not last as long and may unravel.
  • Straight hair with kinky roots:  twist while damp; the straight hair will set better this way.

Taking a one-inch square section of hair, divide the section into two parts.  Starting at the scalp, entwine one part around the other and twist down until you reach the end of the section.  Roll the end of the twist between your thumb and forefinger to create a coil that keep the twist together.  You probably won’t need it, but a light gel or setting lotion can be applied either before or after twisting.

Once you get the hang of it, you can experiment with zig-zag or diamond partings.  Just be sure to make each section roughly the same size.

Pay attention to:
-Your hair partings. It’s similar with braids: if the partings aren’t neat, even, and uniform, they’ll show up, and not in a good way.
-Remove all tangles so your twist will be smooth and without “lumps.”

What can be done with a twist?
Anything you can do with a braid, you can do with a twist.  Set them on rollers. Twists them around themselves to form knots which you can then wear as it or undo to get a “crinkly” effect.  You can even twists them around other twists.  Or you can leave them alone and just let them hang.

carmenmodel2_hj70

This model has naturally, long straight, thick and medium auburn hair with light golden highlights only in the front. She has no bangs so her layers start a couple of inches below the chin angling all the way down to the ends. Layers continue around the back, shorter in the crown for volume and lift and gradually into longer layers.

To work the look, mousse is applied to damp hair especially at the root area where volume is needed. A paddle brush is used to dry the hair until it is almost completely dry, beginning at the roots and working down towards the ends. For the final drying stage, a large round brush is used on the front layers rolling the brush towards the face. To keep the hair looking smooth and sleek a hair polish is lightly used.

wavy-to-straight

What do you with uncontrollable wavy full hair? The answer is to chemically relax the hair. Once the hair is relaxed there is very little or no blow drying with a brush to get the wave out. Add a little gel, comb and you are ready to go. If your hair is to wavy or curly to spike up, maybe a relaxer is the answer.

His hair was cut with clippers on the sides and left longer on top. Styles his hair with a little gel, a comb and squirt of hairspray.

The easiest thing to do with long, straight hair is to just brush it. After you take your morning shower, blow dry your hair and brush all the tangles out. (Don’t air dry because this can often make your hair puffy and frizzy all day). Use some hairspray to keep your hair in place (light or medium hold, a maximum hold can often make your hair too stiff).

If you have lots of hair, I would strongly advise against putting it up in a ponytail because your hair will hurt when you let it back down. (Trust me, I know!) Ponytails are great ideas if you don’t have as much hair.

Another good option for any type of hair is putting it into pigtails. Part in the middle and braid the two parts. Make sure you use hairspray to keep it in place. This way, your hair won’t completely fall apart by the end of the day. (Sometimes those stupid little hairs can fall out, and hairspray will keep those in check!) Pigtails are easy, simple, and quick. You just need 5-10 minutes. It’s also really cute on girls!

A tip for getting haircuts: layers! Layers look good on girls with longer hair. You can curl the shorter sections of hair towards your face, really framing it and making you look gorgeous!

If you have long wavy hair, work with your hair to enhance its look. You can add bounce and texture to curls using various hair products–including mousse, hairspray. You can also use curling irons to enhance your natural curls. After you get out of the shower, let your hair air dry and see what happens. Continue reading »

Changing Your Hair Style

Sometimes we just want something a little different for our look, without having to actually cut and permanently change the hair style we have right now.

Here are a few ideas to change things up and get a new hair style, without relying on the conventional curling iron.

If your hair is naturally curly or wavy and you don’t feel like taking the steps to work with and control your curly locks, there are ways to artificially straighten your untamed tresses. Some people opt for chemical straightening, or relaxing, which is done at a salon. However, this is costly and the process must be repeated at least once a year. Here is another way to straighten your hair, in the comfort of your own home:1.) In the shower, wash hair with a shampoo and conditioner set such as Pantene Pro-V Extra Straight or Frizz Ease Straight Ahead. Stay within the same product line, and don’t use a 2-in-1 shampoo + conditioner as it doesn’t provide enough conditioner.

2.) Once a week, after conditioning, apply a deep conditioner like Neutrogena Triple Moisture Daily Deep Conditioner and let it sit for 10-20 minutes (the longer the better) while you shower and shave. If you’re really pressed for time and cannot afford to wait that long, check out Garnier Fructose Fortifying 3 Minute Masque instead. Continue reading »

Straight-hair-friz

My hair is impossibly straight. Curling it doesn’t work, and I don’t want to ruin my hair with a perm. What style would be easy to achieve every morning?
A N S W E R

You’ve got what most women would kill for — especially this season.

Your hair will look fuller and less lank if it has some layers cut into it. If you pick up any fashion magazine, you’ll see several hairdos that fit the bill — supermodel Amber Valletta’s hair for one. It’s about shoulder-length, with some shorter pieces in the front. Continue reading »

Proper-

My hair has absolutely no volume. I’ve tried to tease it; I blow-dry my hair upside down, and within an hour, it’s back to the way it was — limp. My hair, unfortunately, is straight, and it’s just below the shoulder. Any suggestions?
Answer-
I don’t know what it is. If we have curly hair, we want straight hair. If we’re blessed with straight locks, we yearn for something a little more twisted. Continue reading »

Herve

I’m having a hair crisis. Well, a dilemma, anyway. I have long, straight hair, and I stopped cutting my (relatively light) bangs a few months ago. Since then, I’ve been wearing headbands and generally feeling pretty silly about it. Any suggestions for other ways to keep my old bangs out of my face that don’t make me look like I’m 7 years old?
Answer-
At least you had wispy bangs. A couple of years ago, I went for the heavy Cleopatra-bangs look — a real joy to grow out. But I did learn a couple of good tricks.

1. Part your hair on the side and smooth the bangs close to your head. Once the bangs get long enough, you can tuck them behind your ear. Lots of designers showed models on the runway for fall with side parts.

medium-length

Well, here’s the thing (and I’m probably not telling you anything you don’t already know): It’s hard to have curly hair. Especially in times like these, when all of the styles shown are essentially for people with the stick-straightest of hair.

So, short of getting your hair chemically straightened (which, incidentally, a friend of mine did recently — and it looks healthy and great), what’s a gal like you to do? Accept your curls, and let your hair grow long. Of course, it depends on exactly how curly your hair is, but since longer hair weighs more, it tends to pull the curl out a bit and give you those incredible Andie MacDowell/Julia Louis-Dreyfus ringlets. The other thing that makes curly hair look its best is to layer it a bit in the front so it doesn’t just hang. Continue reading »

The points represent the weakest part of frizzy hair. Not only our scalp secretes little sebum (an oily substance lubricating and protective) but it also has difficulties to progress to the ends. Here are some reasons that should push you to take better care of your tips.

Dry ends … poor distribution of sebum!

The sebum flows more easily than on a straight hair on a curly hair (irregular surface). Indeed, hampered by the loops, it does not reach the peak. This is why they are dry and more prone to external aggressions (sun, wind, cold, combing, straightening, coloring, straightening, …). Continue reading »
