Here’s how to land the shiniest tresses around from Humanhairstyler.com

Shower Power
“The right shampoo and conditioner can really help boost shine,” says celebrity stylist Laurent D., who created the sleek ballerina-inspired styles for Rebecca Taylor’s Fall 2013 show. “Day to day, rely on moisturizing shampoos and conditioners that will help seal the cuticle and smooth the hair shaft.” Once a week, lather up with a detoxifying shampoo to remove dulling product build up. In the shower, use a wide-tooth comb to distribute the conditioner evenly from roots to ends. Before you get out of the shower, blast your hair with cold water. A cool rinse closes the hair’s cuticle so it reflects light better.

Initial twisting

Carol’s Daughter Loc Butter, Queen Helene gel, Aveda Purefume Humectant or any other all-natural product that is alcohol free and doesn’t flake. Stay way from products with beeswax, shea butter, lanolin or petroleum, which can all cause build-up in the hair and possibly irritate scalp and skin.

Shampoo

I just love Dr Bronner’s Peppermint shampoo liquid! I use it on my face, on my body and in my hair! It smells great, is really invigorating to the scalp and isn’t drying. A company called Jason’s makes a tea tree oil shampoo I’ve heard is good, but you may want to investigate other brands. Continue reading »

Well the time has finally come. It’s been WAY too long and I’m ashamed! But I’ve come bearing pictures a-plenty!! My Sisterlocks are now 41 months old! I love them more and more everyday! I STILL can’t keep my hands out of them. They’re finally long enough for me to sport a very impressive (in my opinion) ponytail-not that I ever want to pull them up! But that ponytail is a God-send at the gym and working with animals.

I’m also playing around with various red dyes. I’m never satisfied with the color and I’m always tempted to go a little bolder. When I first dyed my locs, I used Blazing Burgundy by Clairol® Textures and Tones. I loved it at first, but then the color faded and it looked more brown than red. So then I tried L’Oreal® for Dark Hair in Intense Red. LOVED IT! But I wanted it brighter! LOL! Currently, I’m using SoftSheen®’s new dye line Optimum™ in Medium Red Violet. Not as bright as I want to try, but my husband and sister assured me it was fine. Anyway, I still love the color. Also I noticed that the color doesn’t bleed when I wash my hair-meaning I don’t see the dye running down the sink with the shampoo and there’s no residue on my towel. It’s my first time dying with it, so we will see how application 2 comes out. Continue reading »

Properly caring for your hair is essential if you want to keep your hair strong and healthy. To start it is important to brush your hair regularly to keep it free of tangles, and to remove hair that has released from the scalp. Here are some fundamental techniques to keep hair healthy.

Long hair. Short hair. Dry or oily hair, curly or straight. Ever wonder if you’re taking proper care of your locks? Are you using the right products? Could your shampoo be damaging your hair? Should you brush your hair more or less? With more than 100,000 hair follicles on your head, it makes sense to learn some hair care tips to keep your hair healthy and shining.

Oily Hair Tips

  • Oily hair means oily scalp. Try washing your hair with good amount of lather and wash it twice.
  • Wash your oily hair on a daily basis. Use a shampoo in a diluted form by mixing it with water first and then apply it to your hair. Dilution will save the scalp from the chemicals present in the shampoo.
  • Don’t brush oily hair frequently because brushing oily hair can actually cause the scalp to produce more oil.
  • For extremely oily hair, a vinegar rinse, comprising of vinegar and water in the ratio (1:4), will help remove oil from your hair, but be sure to avoid using vinegar on the scalp.
  • Drink loads of water and keep yourself and your hair hydrated. Drinking water is not only good for your oily hair and dry scalp, but it’s great for your skin health as well.

How to shampoo
Soak hair in water. Apply shampoo designed for your hair type. Use just enough to work up a good lather all over. Rinse well. If your hair still feels dirty or oily, shampoo and rinse again.

Chemical Treatments
While you may want to experiment with color, perming or relaxing your hair, you need to know that they can seriously damage your hair, notes KidsHealth, a division of the Nemours Foundation. Instead of using a chemical relaxer, blow-dry your hair straight once or twice a week, and embrace your natural texture. Consider semipermanent color over permanent, which lasts about four weeks and is less damaging to your hair, or use wash-out color for a quick change.

Top 3 personal hair care tips for you!

  • Get a trim every 6 weeks. This will strip away the dead hair and reveal the fresh new layer of hair.
  • Apply half a cup of olive oil to your hair tips in the shower. This will prevent your split ends and if you already have them, it will work to seal them up.
  • Take half a cup of egg whites and massage it into your scalp for about 5 minutes. Rinse off with a bit of shampoo. This will make your hair beyond shiny and soft.

So, there you have it! Some tips you got to know to keep those luscious locks looking great!

Locs

No combs or brushes necessary; no wonder she’s smiling.

Starting Out

  • Palm roll method

-Part a section of hair, place the length between your palms and roll the hair between your hands. It will form a cylindrical shape.

  • Twist method

-Part a section of hair, then divide that section into two parts.  Twist them around each other until you reach the ends.

  • Free-form locks

-Shampoo condition and apply your oils, but do not comb.  Shampoo however often you wish, but do not remove the shed hairs.  After a while the shed hairs will form masses that you will not be able to untangle.

If you hair texture is tightly curled enough, you shouldn’t need any products to help it lock.  If you must use something, choose a light gel or wax.

Basic Styling
During the first six months, you may find your locks hard to control; they may fly everywhere.  Eventually they will begin to “drop” and you’ll have more versatility.  Locks can be plaited then loosened for a crinkled effect; you can even set them on rollers. Stylist recommend that you avoid shampooing for the first 3 to 4 weeks since water will loosen the locks.  You can however cleanse your scalp with cotton pads soaked in witch hazel or a mild astringent, and apply oil as necessary.

Pay Attention To
-The size you make your locks.  If they’re too small, they will thin out and break off!

Avoid
Heavy shampoos and conditioners and styling products. Locks are 3-dimensional: they have length, width, and depth.  Using heavy products are it difficult to rinse throughly from locks.

Natural-Afros

I used to assume that women who had very short hair had run into a bad experience with the hot comb or a perm.  What woman in her right mind would cut off all her hair on purpose?  I used to wonder, until I did it myself.

What is a natural?
Naturals, or Afros if you prefer, are the simplest in style and when worn very short, are extremely easy to maintain.  You can wear it to basically any length, but depending on your hair texture, it may lose it’s shape as it grows out.

Basic Styling
Wash and condition, apply an oil or leave-in conditioner, pick it out, and let it dry, and you’re on your way!

Variations

  • Place a part on one side.
  • After washing and picking it out, tie on a silk/satin scarf, do-rag, or stocking cap to smooth it down.
  • Using the pads of your fingers, rub your head in circles to encourage curls.  Do this for awhile, say 5-10 minutes. The more you rub, the more your curls will stand out.  I wouldn’t suggest this for hair longer than one and a half inches long.  When it’s time to shampoo, the curls can be hard to untangle.

Pay Attention To:

  • The area along the nape of your neck.  You may have stray hairs that are spoiling your look.
  • The overall cut.  It should flatter your face shape and shouldn’t look to harsh (unless that’s your preference.)

versatility-braid

The manageability of a natural with the versatility of a braid.

  • The relaxed hair is gone; you even wore a short natural for a while.  But now it’s getting longer…
  • You decided to trim away the relaxed hair gradually and now you’re in that in-between stage dealing with two different textures…

What do you do with it?  Twist it!

What’s so great about it?
If your hair has graduated from the afro, you may be clueless as to what to do with it.  Your wash-n-go days are pretty much over.  Twists make dealing with the kinkiest, curliest hair relatively easy.  You don’t have to retwist every day; it’s possible for some twists to last up to 3 weeks or so.  And if you’re thinking about locking, twists give you a general idea of what to expect.

If your hair is at the half-way mark but you can’t bear to part with the straight ends just yet, you may be having a touch time making to two textures blend.  Twists add texture, style, and help “disguise” that line where kinky and straight hair meet.

Doing the Twist
The best time to do any styling is right after a good shampoo, but can mist your hair lightly with water if you want.

  • Kinky hair: twist while damp or dry, but you’ll have two different results. Dry twists may not last as long and may unravel.
  • Straight hair with kinky roots:  twist while damp; the straight hair will set better this way.

Taking a one-inch square section of hair, divide the section into two parts.  Starting at the scalp, entwine one part around the other and twist down until you reach the end of the section.  Roll the end of the twist between your thumb and forefinger to create a coil that keep the twist together.  You probably won’t need it, but a light gel or setting lotion can be applied either before or after twisting.

Once you get the hang of it, you can experiment with zig-zag or diamond partings.  Just be sure to make each section roughly the same size.

Pay attention to:
-Your hair partings. It’s similar with braids: if the partings aren’t neat, even, and uniform, they’ll show up, and not in a good way.
-Remove all tangles so your twist will be smooth and without “lumps.”

What can be done with a twist?
Anything you can do with a braid, you can do with a twist.  Set them on rollers. Twists them around themselves to form knots which you can then wear as it or undo to get a “crinkly” effect.  You can even twists them around other twists.  Or you can leave them alone and just let them hang.

Your curly hair suffer two evils: they are fragile and they are dry! Your scalp does not produce enough sebum , making it sensitive and dries out your tips. So the key word is hydration.

Here are tips to nourish your dry hair:

  • A hair mask: The ideal is to make it a week. There are all sorts, but rather choose a mask made from nourishing shea butter and sweet almond, which are ideal for hair frizzy and curly, as they soften and moisturize.
  • You can also cook you a homemade mask! Here is a small simple recipe that will give a boost to your hair…
  • Take a lawyer, a can of coconut milk and a tablespoon of olive oil. Mix ingredients in a blender, apply on hair and leave for half an hour or an hour. Voila!
  • Argan oil is a true miracle. We apply a few drops just before going to bed on the whole hair and is left to stand overnight, the story that hair absorb the product. The next morning, you wash your hair and it displays a mane roots nourished jusqu’aus tips!
  • A shampoo hydra tan: it must contain nutrients such as butter, shea , aloe, sweet almond or avocado. But it must also be gentle, not to attack a fragile scalp.

In my bathroom:

  • The mask Ultra Soft with avocado oil and shea butter from Garnier .
  • From the argan oil .

- Shampoo 2 in a very soft butter shea of Dop .

The coloring, hair trauma factor

The coloration has evolved in recent years. But it still remains an unpleasant operation for your hair. Before you start, consider these few items. Your hair will thank you.

- Discoloration:

This process can lighten the color of her hair, or to prepare them for the next color in dyed lighter. If you intend to make a color more than two tones below your natural color, it will be necessary to perform a fade. To do so, it soaks the hair of oxidizer. This will dilute the color pigments. After bleaching, your hair will be much more fragile and brittle. If your hair is permed, avoid at all costs you embark on this operation. Continue reading »

1. Under washing of hair. Black hair should be gently shampooed every 7 to 10 days. It is better to have more frequent gentle shampoos rather than waiting and having to shampoo weeks of build-up, oils, and dirt from the hair.

2. Too much heat on the hair. When using a pressing iron, don’t use the “high” setting. If you can hear a “sizzle”, it is too hot. It may take a little longer to get the results you are after but your hair will not suffer the damage it would have with too much heat. Try not to use heat (irons or rollers) everyday. There are many hair care secrets for avoiding some of the most common problems like split ends, dull hair, or static in the hair. But in general, try to remember that the real secret to healthy hair is the old adage,

“less is more.” The following are some of the natural hair care tips you need to follow

SPLIT ENDS

All growing hair will split. Essentially the inner cortex of the shaft of protein that comprises the individual hair becomes dry. With this loss of moisture the hair literally unravels like a fraying rope. The only cure is to cut off the split end. Remember that the ends should be trimmed with the tip of the scissors only and done one at a time. You are trying to remove the damaged ends, not to alter the length or appearance of your hair. The best way to get completely natural hair care products is to make your own home made natural hair care products. There are many websites and books with

homemade hair care products recipes that you can use. When you make your own products, you know exactly what is going in them and you are certain of their quality. Also, you know that if the product does not lather the way you want, it is not the fault of some company. You make the decision about any additives or chemicals to include in the preparation. Picture-of-L

Now that we’ve discussed what it takes to grow healthy, long hair, it’s time to discuss how to pamper the hair you already have to ensure it’s in top condition.

As we discussed before, hair is technically “dead” — But that doesn’t mean you can treat it poorly or simply ignore it. Dr. George Michael, a world-renowned long hair care expert, said long hair needed to be treated like “fine, old lace.” That’s because the longer your hair is, the older it is and the gentler the care it requires.

There are ways to smooth the scales on the hair shaft to make it appear shiny and healthy. There are also ways to properly hydrate your hair and fill in the damaged gaps to make it appear thick and bouncy. It all depends on what you put on your hair and how you treat it.

Coconut oil: the science has spoken!

Good news (at least for those who did not know): a study in the very serious Journal of Cosmetic Science demonstrated the beneficial effects of coconut oil on hair health! To be more precise, this is a comparative study of three oils including two frequently used in the hair industry namely mineral oil and sunflower oil. Purpose of the study? To compare the effects of these oils on damaged hair then hair healthy. And the least we can say is that the results of this study are instructive. Continue reading »
