The easiest thing to do with long, straight hair is to just brush it. After you take your morning shower, blow dry your hair and brush all the tangles out. (Don’t air dry because this can often make your hair puffy and frizzy all day). Use some hairspray to keep your hair in place (light or medium hold, a maximum hold can often make your hair too stiff).

If you have lots of hair, I would strongly advise against putting it up in a ponytail because your hair will hurt when you let it back down. (Trust me, I know!) Ponytails are great ideas if you don’t have as much hair.

Another good option for any type of hair is putting it into pigtails. Part in the middle and braid the two parts. Make sure you use hairspray to keep it in place. This way, your hair won’t completely fall apart by the end of the day. (Sometimes those stupid little hairs can fall out, and hairspray will keep those in check!) Pigtails are easy, simple, and quick. You just need 5-10 minutes. It’s also really cute on girls!

A tip for getting haircuts: layers! Layers look good on girls with longer hair. You can curl the shorter sections of hair towards your face, really framing it and making you look gorgeous!

If you have long wavy hair, work with your hair to enhance its look. You can add bounce and texture to curls using various hair products–including mousse, hairspray. You can also use curling irons to enhance your natural curls. After you get out of the shower, let your hair air dry and see what happens. Continue reading »

Constantly fighting with your flat iron to keep your hair smooth? Extremely thick hair that never stays flat? Can’t recreate the look your stylist does while even using the same tools? All of these problems can stem from one very simple and easy to fix mistake; you are not correctly flat ironing your hair. Sure you may have gotten the results before but today, for some reason, your hair is out of control. Here are step by step directions to make your hair straightening life easier to handle and get you the salon results you are seeking.

1) Apply a small amount of straightening cream, balm or gel and comb through

2) Make sure your hair is completely dried before you start.

3) Beginning at the bottom of your head near your neck, section off the hair that falls on your back from the hair farther up on top of your head

with either a ponytail or clip (larger sections will take more time to flat iron and more passes over the hair to make it straight) Continue reading »

The Double Knot

This style is elegant and simple. If your hair is bone straight it can be conservative and if you have curls or waves then it can be worn messy. To get the messy look, first loosely part your hair to equal sections down the middle. Now loose the ponytails at the neck such that they are even.Twist the sections of hair and wrap them in a circular motion till you get a loose knot.If you want to go for a conservative style ,simply use your comb to part your hair and comb it to get two neat fashioned ponytails at the nape of your neck. Now smoothly twist your hair, and wrap the buns in circular motion like above before getting the ends tucked in.This style takes not more than 5 minutes.

Going to the hairdresser can be a nerve-wracking experience, especially if you aren’t’ sure what you want. Ease your nerves by doing some research ahead of time, browse women’s magazines or the internet for examples of the style you’re looking for, and don’t be afraid to bring a few pictures into the salon with you. Sharing these pictures with the hairdresser will give he or she a visual idea of what type of cut you’re interested in.However, it’s important to keep in mind that just because a particular haircut looks good on Jennifer Aniston does not mean it will look good on you. Different cuts are flattering for different face shapes; determining what shape yours is can help guide you in the right direction. Tie your hair back in a ponytail and look straight ahead into a mirror. Focusing mainly on your jaw line, see if your face is round, oval, heart-shaped or square. According to famous hairstylist John Frieda, your jaw line is the most important factor in deciding what length your new cut should be. Look at your profile in the mirror.
If you have a sharp angle where your jaw turns to meet your ear, you’re lucky–you can pull off almost any length of hair. If your jaw is long and sloping, avoid wearing your hair up or pulling it back, and stay away from really short styles as they will expose your jaw line. Before selecting a style, however, let the hairdresser know what type of routine you keep and how much time you have to spend on your hair each morning. Choppy, layered cuts, for example, require much more prep time than straight cuts. Very few women have exact, ideal proportions in their countenance, but read on and you’ll learn ways you can use your hair as a frame to fool the eye into thinking you do.

ROUND FACE

Soft, choppy styles such as layers cut around the cheeks work better for round faces than pin-straight, flat or sleek styles do. Layers that fall just around the cheekbones will shade them and cause the face to look more narrow. Volume on top of the crown will create a domed look that adds height and thus elongates the roundness of the face. If you like bangs, graduated bangs cut on an angle that also fall just around the cheeks are your best bet. If your neck is also round, choppy layers that fall around the neckline will also downplay the plumpness.

OVAL FACE

The oval is considered to be the “perfect” face shape due to it’s popularity and versatility. This is the shape that all haircuts seek to achieve, and people who already have this shape can get away with almost any haircut. The only thing you’ll want to be careful about is if you’re going for an uber-short look. Your face may be a “classic oval”, but if your scalp isn’t beautifully shaped a short cut can look misshapen.

LONG FACE

The solution for a long face is to make it look shorter. This can be achieved by wispy, see-through bangs and chin length cuts. Longer, shapeless styles and straight bobs serve only to further elongate. The fullest, thickest part of the hair should rest behind the ears and be soft and low on the crown. If your chin is pointy, make sure your hair doesn’t curve in towards it, but sweeps up and away instead.

SQUARE FACE

Square faces need to avoid short crops, symmetry, or anything geometric which will enhance the square ness; instead, go for soft curves which will soften the severity of the square jaw line. If you can get a slightly voluminous point at the crown, this will also detract from the square outline. Light, wispy, see-through bangs can also soften the features. Stay away from blunt cuts and hard, sleek lines as these will exaggerate the square shape. A cut with soft curves, slight bangs would be best for this face type.

HEART-SHAPED FACE

Faces that are narrow at the bottom and wide at the top need a cut that hides the hairline with graduated bangs and a choppy style that flips out on the ends. When the hair turns outwards rather than inwards, it equalizes the shape by giving volume around the narrow bottom of the face. If, on the other hand, your face is an upside-down heart (narrow at the top, heavier at the jaw) make sure there is fullness at the top of the head instead to balance out the chin.

I’ve always found Victorian updos to be particularly beautiful, especially since my great-grandmother wore them. I created this easy updo (photo on the right) for special occasions when I want to wear one of my decorative Victorian combs.

First, I create a low ponytail and secure it with a non-stick elastic. I then make a hole with my finger in the section of hair right above the elastic. I bring the ponytail up with my other hand and tuck it through the top of the hole, pushing it through until it comes out the underside. Next, I pick up the looped-through ponytail and tuck the end into the area where I had made the hole. A little hairspray and a bobby pin or two will ensure the hair stays tucked in neatly. I then place a decorative hair comb in the same spot for an easy, yet elegant Victorian style.

My hair has absolutely no volume. I’ve tried to tease it; I blow-dry my hair upside down, and within an hour, it’s back to the way it was — limp. My hair, unfortunately, is straight, and it’s just below the shoulder. Any suggestions?
Answer-
I don’t know what it is. If we have curly hair, we want straight hair. If we’re blessed with straight locks, we yearn for something a little more twisted. Continue reading »

I really need help with my hair! It’s a little longer than my shoulders and all one length. I just leave it down, and I’m getting bored with it.
A N S W E R
You sound like you’re suffering from the old curly vs. straight, the grass-is-always-greener thing. (You know how no matter what kind of hair you have, you always seem to want the opposite kind?) There are a couple of things you could do that aren’t too drastic and will probably help you get over the follicle boredom.

Q. When I color my hair it NEVER comes out like hair color samples at the beauty store. What’s up with that?
A. All hair color samples show the results when applied to bleached hair. The color comes out differently if you hair hasn’t been bleached first because the new color blends with the color pigments that are already in the hair. Bleach hair first if you’re really itching to have a look straight from the box.

Q. I have African-American hair and it’s been in braids for awhile. I would like to perm my hair as as soon as I take them out because I know I’ll have a lot of new growth. What will happen if I perm too soon and what should I do?
A.When you got your hair braided and when you’re having them removed, chances are there are these microscopic abrasions lying in there. So the same thing that would happen if you scratched your scalp before perming will happen here – it will burn/sting with relaxer on it. There’s also a good chance you’ll experience breakage because they hair hasn’t had time to rest. Your best bet is to speak to your stylist so you know when’s the best time for you to relax your hair. This time will vary depending on the condition of your hair. Continue reading »

Q- As I approach 40, it seems my hair is thinning rapidly. Are there possible medical reasons why a woman of my age might be losing hair? How can I find out if I’m likely to suffer this fate?

Ans – For a look into what your future holds, start by digging out a family album. Thinning hair (like hair color) is a familial trait. If your mother and grandmother lost their hair, you probably will too. If you think you’re losing your hair prematurely, there may be several possible medical explanations.

Thyroid disease can cause thinning hair. All women should be periodically screened for thyroid problems with a blood test. If testing shows a thyroid problem, then appropriate medical treatment is important for your overall health as well as the health of your hair.

Some thinning of hair can be attributed to stress. Hair is constantly growing and being shed–on average, we lose up to 100 hairs a day! A traumatic event or an illness can disrupt this cycle of hair growth and loss causing a lot of hairs to fall out at once, instead of a few hairs falling out every day. Hormonal factors like pregnancy and menopause can also rearrange the hair growth/hair loss cycle. Continue reading »

Personal Hair Advisor:
Using Extensions

Personal Hair Advisor: If you want a longer look, but your hair isn’t growing fast enough to suit you, you can fake it with hair extensions. These clever swatches of hair were once the secret of the rich and famous, but salons across the country are now making them available to everyone.

The best extensions, made from human hair, can run you close to $1,000, but there are cheaper options. The swatch of hair is either stitched onto or woven into your own hair and can last for months with regular adjustments. As a more temporary and affordable alternative, some companies offer a do-it-yourself version that attaches with clips.

Personal Hair Advisor:
Slimming a Full Face

Personal Hair Advisor: The first rule for slimming down a fuller face is to style the hair away from the face. This will open up your face, cheekbones and eyes, and will expose the jawline instead of hiding it (as hair hanging down at the sides might do). For example, if you have bangs, break them up in pieces or strands rather than wearing them straight across. Continue reading »
