Many women hate their hair color once it’s dyed, particularly if it becomes high-maintenance to hide dark roots. We asked New York hair color pro Angela Cosmai of Angela Cosmai Salon for some great tips on how to deal with your colored hair.

Rule No. 1: If you’ve made a mistake with hair color, definitely go to a salon to have it fixed, as using a home treatment could damage your hair. Ask your colorist to use a product with no ammonia and no peroxide to prevent hair damage. A colorist can add highlights or lowlights to improve a bad color and change the look. Continue reading »

The color isn’t the same as on the box
It rarely is. Haircolor is supposed to work with your own haircolor (natural or otherwise – basically whatever you have right now) to produce something approaching a natural enhancement or at least individual, color. Unless you strip your hair to a pale blonde, the color on the box is usually never the same color as what you wind up with. No need to panic, just figure out what about the color is wrong; if it is too dark, try washing it a few times to see if it lightens a bit; or strip your hair and apply a lighter shade in the same color family. If it is too light, go one darker. Not red enough get a redder shade. It’s pretty simple.

I want to take this color out of my hair
I have had reports that using dishwashing liquid like Dawn or whatever can help rinse out demis – this applies to semi-permanents as well. Try it if you want to, I haven’t tried it, so I can’t say if it really works on me. What has worked is a product called “UnColor”. It comes in an aqua blue/turquoise colored bottle and is designed JUST for removing semi-permanent haircolor. There is also an “UnColor” product for removing permanent colors from hair, but I have never tried it. Continue reading »

Instead of spending hundreds of dollars and several hours draped in plastic in a salon chair each month, consider the multitude of options available in home hair color. It’s no surprise that one half of American women color their hair, but did you know 38 percent of them do the deed at home? By 2012, hair-care specialists predict that number will shoot to 45 percent. Today, do-it-yourself color kits are practically foolproof, so forgo that costly trek to the salon and toss a box of haircolor into your supermarket shopping cart.

The first hurdle in home haircolor is choosing the appropriate product. How drastic a change are you craving? What sort of maintenance can you handle? Match this criteria to one of the following categories: Continue reading »

There are many things to consider when selecting a mask treatment, including hair type (fine or coarse), porosity, amount of chemical treatments the hair has been exposed to and the level of overall dryness of the hair.

Recently, we discovered Kerastase, a European company that just launched its products in America. Kerastase carries two masks: One is for fine or thin hair and the other for very dry or coarse hair. Masks add a level of deep penetrating conditioning that tends to weigh down the hair, so don’t expect your hair to have lots of body directly after using one. The trade-off however, is shiny and very touchable hair.

What To Look For

When you want just a subtle pop of color, a boost to your own natural hue, a refresh on your dye job, or a gradual change, a color-enhancing shampoo may do the trick. Color-enhancing shampoos do just what the name implies–they enhance a specific color by adding small amount of tint to your own hair. The best color enhancers will maintain your color over time by depositing the perfect balance of color on your hair; enough to rejuvenate your color and cover roots while being gentle enough to use three or four times per week. The best color enhancer will not contain harsh chemicals, such as ammonia, alcohol or peroxide, and will contain some sort of UV protection and conditioning for the hair. Continue reading »

Personal Hair Advisor:
Lighten Too-Dark Haircolor

Personal Hair Advisor: You might have heard your stylist say that color can’t lift color, meaning once you put a color on your hair, you can’t use another color to try and make your hair lighter. Tint isn’t designed to do that. You’ll have to resort to some kind of decolorizer or bleach to lift out the color. And that’s something you should definitely let a colorist do for you.

Personal Hair Advisor:
Choosing a Haircolor

Personal Hair Advisor: When you are on a quest for the perfect hair color, there are two things you must take into consideration: the type of color that is best for your hair and the shade that will best complement your skin tone.

The two main types of hair color are permanent and semi-permanent. Permanent color is the only color that can cover gray. If your hair is more than 30 percent gray and your primary motivation for coloring it is to cover the gray, permanent color is your best option. Many people shy away from permanent color because they are afraid it will cause serious damage to their hair. But with the improved formulations most products have today, this is very unlikely. In fact, permanent color can actually make gray hair less wiry and can create a smoother, softer texture. Continue reading »
