Nobody really knows how they start, spread or grow. Hair myths, like urban legends, migrate around the globe. Once they take hold, they gather strength and develop a life of their own. A hair myth might start slowly and evolve until it takes on a completely new form. Some of the myths endure for years.

What should you do when you hear an urban hair myth? When in doubt ask a true hair expert. This does not include your best bud, the local bartender or the checkout clerk at the local beauty mart. Always get the facts before you act. Your hair will love you for it! Continue reading »

Hello my name is Denise Byrd and I am 27. I have been natural for 2 1/2 years. I decided to write to tell of my experience so far. It definitely has not been easy for me because I am the only one of my friends and family who is natural. I felt very strange at first. It was like I was not even the same person. People started looking at me funny, as if I were going through something traumatic. No one believed I would do it, until I did. It took me a while to become comfortable with myself again. After a year or so I started to feel like my old self again. Continue reading »

I have soft, African-textured hair, which I adore. I wear my hair in all types of hairstyles and receive compliments from people wherever I go. Many times, other people of African descent tell me I am brave to wear my hair in some of the less-tame styles I don, like loose and wind-blown. I love my hair, thank God for its texture and fullness. I feel a little sad when I see sisters with hairlines that start behind their ears (victims of the curling iron, relaxer or some inappropriate hairstyling process).

At four years of age, my mother conked (the precursor to the relaxer) my hair with disastrous results. My father was horrified, my mother penitent, and I was not happy. I had short, picky (as we say in the Caribbean about unruly hair that is abused and dry) hair until I was about 12 years old as a result of the earlier disaster. During those years I just wanted to have hair on my head. During that period of time, my family and probably the public in general, did not know of the many hair products that seem to be commonplace in today’s market. During those years my parents comforted me and told me my hair was short and beautiful. Continue reading »

sports hairstyles

On a track, not a question of having the bangs away from her face every two minutes. Similarly, nothing less than zen yoga lose balance due to cumbersome long hair. To avoid this, one solution: put some order in her hair before going to vent. And no, while interesting, the horse-tail is not the only option!

A low bun at the nape, or raised above the head, is an elegant alternative to replace the eternal horse-tail. Alternatively, simple but original: tie your hair withsports hairstyles a scrunchie and then back half the length of the horse-tail through it. You will get a short loop. In addition, if you have long hair , the result looks like almost a bun: class guaranteed!

You prefer the variant hippie chic? Using a comb, pull your hair on the side, and then tie a braided loose. If you have a fringe, or your hair is short, use small parts to fix them. Short cuts are particularly attractive with the fringe attached to the side by webs. Another option: a thin headband that will help you remove your unwanted facial wicks for sport, while remaining stylish. Finally, you can braid your hair. And most importantly, do not wash them right before you exercise, keep this step for the end of the session. Freshly washed hair is usually too soft to stay tied or braided. Continue reading »

If you neglect your hair, we believe that you do the same with your work.

Once the hair below the shoulders down, it is advisable to take in a ponytail or bun. Strands that fall on the face affect eye contact, making you look like a distant person or not concentrated.

In terms of professional hair, chignons and horse-tails are unbeatable. Version smooth or curly, braided or single, with or without line is ideal for the office, fix it with a little hairspray. Icing on the cake, these looks are modulated in a jiffy. A simple modification is often enough to create something new. Continue reading »

I hope I’m not too late and that you haven’t done anything too drastic with those electric clippers. Fine hair can be a drag, but it’s by far the end of the world. (I don’t have the thickest locks around, but you’d never know.)

Let me share a couple little secrets with you. Try a volumizer — a spray-on, leave-in-thingy that makes your hair seem thicker. It’s not gross and won’t leave you with helmet head like hairspray. It kind of plumps up the shaft of your hair and makes it look thicker. I’ve used a couple of good ones — Kiehl’s volumizing spray, Phyto volumizer and Redken’s Fat Cat. Also, you can try a volumizing shampoo which does the same kind of thing. As for the blunt vs. layered thing, you’ve been led astray. If you have some good long layers in your hair, it’ll look thicker. Fine hair when it’s blunt cut tends to just kind of hang there like a mop.

OK, now the biggest problem you’re facing really has nothing to do with your hair, but more with that big hair thing your friends are forcing on you. Buck the big hair trend. (Please, I’m on my knees here. I’m begging.)

I was recently asked to be in a wedding. As the bride’s gift to each attendant, she is paying to have our hair done for the wedding. Unfortunately, though, she is also choosing the hairstyle. I love her dearly, but the bride’s fashion sense lies somewhere back in 1987. The woman who is cutting our hair also did my friend’s “glamour shots,” so I have an idea of what we’re in for here. Should I keep my mouth shut and bear the shame of having big ’80s hair, or tell the stylist that I’d rather not be sprayed and teased — or get a pixie cut right before the wedding?
A N S W E R –
What is it about friends and weddings? Women often lose all sense of style once they embark on that princess fantasy cruise to matrimonial bliss.

Don’t do anything drastic (read: don’t get the pixie). I’m sure that, with a little tact and persuasion, you can get the hair spray doyenne to calm her act. First, have a conversation/strategy session with the other bridesmaids. (I’m assuming that they don’t want to be Farrah Fawcett either.) If you individually and collectively express your concerns to the stylist and then to the bride, you’ve got a much better shot at avoiding humiliation. Remember: There’s strength in numbers. If you want to create a hip but low-maintenance short haircut, try using the scissors-over-comb method.

Diane Jeep Ries, a hairdresser with more than 20 years of salon experience, presents the in’s and out’s of the scissors-over-comb method. These tips will enable you to create hip hairstyles at home.

Diane Jeep Ries, a hairdresser with more than 20 years of salon experience, presents the in’s and out’s of the scissors-over-comb method. These tips will enable you to create hip hairstyles at home.

Shorter hair does not mean just shorter length; it can also mean reducing the breadth. For example, if you want to have more shape in a jacket, you’ll take out the fabric from the waistline, not take the hem out. It’s the same with hair. The way to achieve that reduction is with the scissors-over-comb method, which is a prime technique for creating more shape. This method will save time and allow you to cut a versatile hairstyle with a delicate, feminine look.

When you work with your hands in hair there are usually three strokes: There’s combing, holding and then cutting the hair. With scissors-over-comb, there are only two strokes. The first stroke combines combing and holding the hair, and the second stroke is cutting the hair. By eliminating one of the three strokes, you will reduce haircutting time by about one third.

The hairstylist’s ideal of facial balance and proportion is to have an equal distance from the hairline to the brow, from the brow to the tip of the nose and from the nose to tip of the chin. Most people do not have perfect balance and proportion, so a hairstylist must create the illusion of it by moving the weight of the hair to emphasize or de-emphasize different areas of the face. What Does Your Long Hair Say

Many women grow their hair long because it makes them feel attractive and confident. But have you ever wondered what others think of you based on your long hair? A researcher at Yale University did, and she conducted a study on how people judge others by their hairstyles.

Dr. Marianne LaFrance, Professor of Psychology and Women’s and Gender Studies at Yale University released her findings this year. She ran the test, sponsored by Procter & Gamble’s Physique line of hair care products, by showing a diverse group of young men and women some 300 digital images featuring a variety of hairstyles and hair colors. The study participants were asked to describe the styles using 10 adjectives: sexy, intelligent, outgoing, self-centered, poor, unpleasant, polished, confident, narrow-minded and careless.
