My first experience with chemical processing was the Jheri Curl, when I was 18, and I couldn’t wait. I was tired of years of the press and curl, and my mother’s refusal to let me perm or cut my hair. I had a head full of thick, shoulder-length tight coils. I never hated my hair, but I had never known what to do with it besides the press and curl. And the straight hairstyles had little appeal for me, a person who likes to change her hairstyle often.

My going away to college necessitated an easy care hairstyle, and the Jheri Curl was the answer. I started not with a Jheri bush but a style that resembled a curly layered bob. I worked it and dealt with the greasy activator and shower caps worn at bedtime. At one point, I had a silver plastic cap; the color was supposed to do something good for the hair I suppose. Anyway, I made the mistake of keeping the cap on one night when I donned a robe and slippers to go to the bathroom at my college dorm. Since most celebs change their looks frequently, I guess that all depends on when one asks the question and what roles said celebs have just been playing.

Currently, I’d say that Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow look sickeningly twinnish with their new short hair. It does more for Brad than for Gwyneth, and I’ll bet money that she’s growing hers out as I type. Julia Roberts chopped off her hair to somewhere near chin length, and it looks great. Then again, she’d have to try pretty hard to look bad. (Which brings me to Demi Moore and the buzz cut. Has that disaster grown in yet? We can only hope.)
