Just like a chef or an architect, stylists rely on three phases of accomplishment: vision, preparation, and execution.

V I S I O N
First, examine the subject’s features. If you do not, then you will not be aware of any scars, surgeries or moles that should be camouflaged by the hair. My subject Scott has a mole at the hairline on his neck. He currently wears his hair long and holds it back in a band. It is a misconception to think that a few long strands makes hair looks fuller. The reality is that when hair is left long and it’s banded together, it separates on top and you can see right through it, making it appear thinner. When you cut the hair shorter, it will lift and look fuller.

In addition to hereditary hair thinning, many African-American women experience other forms of hair loss known as traumatic alopecia. Traumatic alopecia may be due to the use of hair reshaping products (relaxers, straighteners, hot combs) or hair braiding methods. Specific types of traumatic alopecia are:

  • traction alopecia – the persistent physical stress involved with tight rollers and tight braiding. Appears as severe thinning above ears with marked recession of hairline, and can occur as thinning at the forehead as well. Prolonged practice of these styling methods can result in irreversible hair loss. Continue reading »

If you want to create a hip but low-maintenance short haircut, try using the scissors-over-comb method.

Diane Jeep Ries, a hairdresser with more than 20 years of salon experience, presents the in’s and out’s of the scissors-over-comb method. These tips will enable you to create hip hairstyles at home.

Shorter hair does not mean just shorter length; it can also mean reducing the breadth. For example, if you want to have more shape in a jacket, you’ll take out the fabric from the waistline, not take the hem out. It’s the same with hair. The way to achieve that reduction is with the scissors-over-comb method, which is a prime technique for creating more shape. This method will save time and allow you to cut a versatile hairstyle with a delicate, feminine look.

When you work with your hands in hair there are usually three strokes: There’s combing, holding and then cutting the hair. With scissors-over-comb, there are only two strokes. The first stroke combines combing and holding the hair, and the second stroke is cutting the hair. By eliminating one of the three strokes, you will reduce haircutting time by about one third.

The hairstylist’s ideal of facial balance and proportion is to have an equal distance from the hairline to the brow, from the brow to the tip of the nose and from the nose to tip of the chin. Most people do not have perfect balance and proportion, so a hairstylist must create the illusion of it by moving the weight of the hair to emphasize or de-emphasize different areas of the face. Your stylist can help you determine which of these six common face shapesmatch your features. Or, slick back your hair, and use a bar of soap to trace your face on the bathroom mirror. Either way, remember that the following style hints are suggestions foreach face shape – not rules!

Oval:
Slightly narrower at the jawline than at the temples, with a gently rounded hairline. Try a variety of styles. Most any style looks great on you! Avoid covering up your “perfect” features with heavy bangs, or too much forward directed hair. Continue reading »

Super-short, C-curved fringes are the frame for faces this season.
If your looking for a cool alternative to this season’s mega-manes, bangs are the best bet. The freshest fringes are cut on a new geometric angle, arching up from the temple to the centre of the forehead, to create a dramatic elliptical silhouette.
Before you let your stylist snip, make sure they think your hairline can handle this short, dramatic look. If hair is thin through the front, don’t go too short-add a bit of length to the fringe. Your stylist will also start the cut further back on the crown, to ensure a thick, solid bang.
“Colour is also great for adding the illusion of thickness,” Leung advises. “Colour the fringe a solid shade, then place some chunks in contrasting colours at the crown, or towards the back of the head, to break up the cut. Don’t be afraid to let your stylist experiment!”

Leung’s (Professional hair stylist)Tip: Before blowdrying, apply a molding gel to the fringe area to give hair a smooth, shiny finish. Try: KMS Haircare’s Configure, TIGI’s Power Trip or Paul Mitchell’s Sculpting Glaze.

Personal Hair Advisor:
Growing Out Bangs
Personal Hair Advisor: Going from bangs to all one length can seem impossible, but it can be done (really!). One trick to try is rather than thinking of your bangs as all one area that needs to grow uniformly out, separate them into sections. Just horizontally separate your bangs into two layers. Let the upper part grow out (cute hair accessories can help here) while continuing to trim the lower part so it just brushes your eyes. Once the upper part blends with the rest, start to grow the lower part out longer. This will not only gradually rework your bangs into your allover length, but it will slowly ease your look from bangs to bang-less! Continue reading »

Traction alopecia results from excessive pulling of the hair, generally while braiding. This occurs very frequently in African-American women due to the tight braiding of the hair beginning in childhood. Ultimately, the pulling results in permanent scarring of the hair follicle, which prevents the hairs from regrowing. This condition can be prevented and treated by loosening the hair braids And homeopathy treatmentIt is also seen occasionally in long-haired people who use barrettes to keep hair out of their faces.

Traction alopecia is a substantial risk in hair weaves, which can be worn either to conceal hair loss, or purely for cosmetic purposes. The former involves creating a braid around the head below the existing hairline, to which an extended-wear hairpiece, or wig, is attached. Since the hair of the braid is still growing, it requires frequent maintenance, which involves the hairpiece being removed, the natural hair braided again, and the piece snugly reattached. The tight braiding and snug hairpiece cause tension on the hair that is already at risk for falling out. Traction Alopecia is one of the most common causes of hair loss in African American women. Although the aforementioned style is one of the culprits, hairstyles such as dreadlocks and single (extension) braids can also have the same effect.Men and women who have suffered from Traction Alopecia have found that the hair loss occurs most at the hair line – primarily around the temples and the sides of their heads..
