1. “I find that if I use a silk scarf, my ends remain nicer. Of course, who wants to go and spend thirty bucks on a scarf for your head? I find silk shirts for under a dollar at the thrift shop, and cut to fit. It works!”
2. “Use Hot olive oil as a hot oil treatment.”
3. “I have some kind of kinky, curly, wavy hair. That’s what I call it and I know that lots of black people have heard the myth about not washing your hair everyday; but for me I decided to do that because I was using glue for my weaves and I just did that because I like to be different from others and look different and change my look. Well, my hair was coming out from constantly putting waves in back to back. My friend and I talked one day about how often black people’s hair should be washed. I told her that I’ll try it and see if my hair would be healthier and thicker and longer. I thoroughly checked my hair every single day and washed and conditioned it too. It certainly did grow. Now I don’t mean it grew 6 inches in one week; but it grew and made my hair very healthy and thicker (used hair thickner shampoo) and longer. I’m not saying it’ll work for every black person and I know that people don’t have time or just don’t want to wash their hair everyday; but it may be what someone out there is looking for and it may be worth a try. I’m not sure….I don’t think it will take someone’s hair out though.”
4. “If you use conditioner, the best time to detangle and is when the conditioner is in your hair.  Use a wide tooth comb.  No need to detangle again after you wash the conditioner out.  Trust me, this really works.”
5. ” I always thought I had to use a conditioner in a jar.  But I found my hair would become so manageable (using my fingers as a comb) when I used the shampoo and matching conditioners that seemed to be marketed for hair types other than afro-hair.  After this I put in a heavy gel and slick my hair back.  If it rains I don’t worry I can go to the beach/pool and not worry about getting my hair wet as I used to.”
6. “I am not a hair stylist –but my hair would be so tangly even after a good conditioner.  When I worked in a salon- I tried a detangler and it really works.  I never thought to use them because I thought they were not for “us”.  I suffered all those years for no reason.”

Hair Styles With Texture.

I have been cutting hair for a long time so I now know what cut works best with almost every hair type. (There are still some types of hair with nasty little patterns from mother nature that I can not tame without mass quantities of products). I love cutting hair that is medium in texture with a slight wave and is healthy and responsive. Of course not everyone has this utopian hair that I dream about and love so much, so for everyone else with just regular hair or maybe not so great hair, here are some suggestions about haircutting. The razor can take on many styles and has equally as many uses for haircutting. There are many actions or results that the razor can produce.

Texture for body and volume.

Removing weight for movement and manageability.

Softening of the hair and style.

Creative freedom for the stylist to carve out the cut.

The best hair for razor cutting is medium to coarse hair either straight or with wave is fine too. I have found in my hair cutting adventures that my best razor cuts are mostly on these hair types although there are many stylist that would argue for the other hair types that they have dominated with the razor as well. Always consult with an experienced stylist about your individual hair needs. Continue reading »

Curly Hairstyles

A Hair: Long, straight and thick. Unable to wrap except with a special iron and lots of hairspray, so they are very natural to flat, stiff and formless. No shampoo hair daily becoming more bold, and only the foam gives them some volume.

B Hair: Hair thin, flat

  • These hairs are found in Asians. Very difficult to style, they do not take the cuts, even with gel or hairspray. As type A, this type of hair should be washed every day or they will become fat and ugly. Continue reading »

I’m always on the hunt for new long hair products and was surprised to learn that Leonor Greyl, an established French hair care company, made a shampoo specifically for long hair. In French, the product is called “Shampooing Creme Moelle de Bambou.” I found it on BeautyScene.com, a wonderful online site for beauty products from all over the world.

BeautyScene recommended pairing the Long Hair Shampoo with Leonor Greyl’s Creme Regeneratrice Conditioner “for Beauty and Protection of Dry Hair”. The products cost me $25 for 7 ounces of shampoo and $23 for 3 1/2 ounces of conditioner — a high price to pay, but I had to find out what the formulas could do for my long hair. Continue reading »

Perming and straightening are basically the same process: The hair is reshaped (put around rods or pulled straight with a comb), a reducing agent breaks down certain strong protein bonds (disulfide bonds) in the hair, and a neutralizer re-forms the bonds in the new shape, whether curly or straight. If you think this sounds drastic, you’re right — it’s the most damaging process of all and leaves your hair porous and prone to breakage. In fact, hair-product manufacturers and salon professionals will tell you never to perm or straighten hair that has been double processed or highlighted, and reputable professionals generally advise against using these processes on permanently colored hair.

Certain hair types may be more common in certain human groups. Understanding these characteristics may be critical in anticipating the results one can expect. African hair is very curly. This single characteristic makes African hair produce some of the best results in hair transplantation, but the dissection must be performed with extreme care to avoid damage to the curved follicles.

Most Asian hair is black, coarse and straight, making this hair type the most difficult when striving for good reconstruction results with traditional hair transplant techniques, especially when the skin is fair. Korean hair, for example, requires very small grafts (usually one to two hairs per graft) to produce a natural look. In fair-haired Caucasians with a low contrast between hair and skin tones, hair transplant results can be spectacular, as the fair skin and blonde hair color match closely. Using only naturally occurring individual follicular units will produce natural results with all hair and skin types. Continue reading »

Do you know what type of black hair texture you have? African hair comes in quite a few different textures, from curls about as thick around one’s pinky finger, to as tight as the spring in a retractable pen. There are several types of black hair textures, adjectives such as “kinky”, “nappy”, or “spiralled” are often used to describe natural afro-textured hair.

If you are growing black hair long it’s important to understand that the sun, the wind and humidity are all three environmental factors that can effect the balance of natural curly hair. Continue reading »
