When I was10 years old my mom decided to perm my hair to make it easier to manage. Over the years I’ve had the Jeri Curl, permanent coloring, straightening, which left my neck and ear lobs with numerous battle scars, and braid extensions, done so tight my scalp literally was raised unnaturally off my head. This is just the tip of the ice burg of hair and scalp torture stories that left me feeling unnatural for so many years. The war was always with the texture of my hair and ultimately with my heritage.
When I was 13 I developed a scalp disorder that has been called sever folliculitis, acne vulgarus, Keloids, and other diagnosis I cannot even begin to spell. I’ve been on every type of penicillin and antibiotic, as well as topical ointments, which my system, over time became immune to. Continue reading »
