Locs

No combs or brushes necessary; no wonder she’s smiling.

Starting Out

  • Palm roll method

-Part a section of hair, place the length between your palms and roll the hair between your hands. It will form a cylindrical shape.

  • Twist method

-Part a section of hair, then divide that section into two parts.  Twist them around each other until you reach the ends.

  • Free-form locks

-Shampoo condition and apply your oils, but do not comb.  Shampoo however often you wish, but do not remove the shed hairs.  After a while the shed hairs will form masses that you will not be able to untangle.

If you hair texture is tightly curled enough, you shouldn’t need any products to help it lock.  If you must use something, choose a light gel or wax.

Basic Styling
During the first six months, you may find your locks hard to control; they may fly everywhere.  Eventually they will begin to “drop” and you’ll have more versatility.  Locks can be plaited then loosened for a crinkled effect; you can even set them on rollers. Stylist recommend that you avoid shampooing for the first 3 to 4 weeks since water will loosen the locks.  You can however cleanse your scalp with cotton pads soaked in witch hazel or a mild astringent, and apply oil as necessary.

Pay Attention To
-The size you make your locks.  If they’re too small, they will thin out and break off!

Avoid
Heavy shampoos and conditioners and styling products. Locks are 3-dimensional: they have length, width, and depth.  Using heavy products are it difficult to rinse throughly from locks.

Short, clean, fresh and easy is the lifestyle for most people in California. This hairstyle demonstrates the exciting look of the California lifestyle. The sides and nape areas are short and tapered close to the head; a little more length is left on top.

To assist Mother Nature, a trace of natural-looking blonde highlights have been placed on top.
A style so carefree no blow-drying is needed-an easy, finished look comes from a dab of gel and a comb.

The way that you do your hair will tell a lot about you. If you have a messy and not calm hair, then you probably are very busy or do not really care about your life. A lot of people pick their hair cuts by seasons. When it is winter is in the United States, people do not like to cut their hair short or bold. Winter is cold and hair will give you some warming during those colds. It wont give you a lot, but I am sure that you will feel a difference that if you had a bold head and a head with hair on it, it would be much colder with a bold head. Continue reading »

The decision to go bald did not come easily. I had hair down to the middle of my back for the better part of 30 years when I made the decision.

Aside from a rare trim, sharp objects had not touched my hair since the mid 70s. So why cut it all off? Simple. My hair was getting thin, very thin and receding. When I looked in the mirror and thought about the future what I saw was a hippy growing older but afraid to cut his hair, still clinging desperately to what was left.

I wore it in a pony tail but that was on its way to being a rat’s tail with a bald spot in the back and receding temples. I did not like that image. So about a week before we moved I stopped by the barber shop for the first time in many years and said shave it off. The barber smiled and seemed to enjoy the process which only took a few minutes. Constantly fighting with your flat iron to keep your hair smooth? Extremely thick hair that never stays flat? Can’t recreate the look your stylist does while even using the same tools? All of these problems can stem from one very simple and easy to fix mistake; you are not correctly flat ironing your hair. Sure you may have gotten the results before but today, for some reason, your hair is out of control. Here are step by step directions to make your hair straightening life easier to handle and get you the salon results you are seeking.

1) Apply a small amount of straightening cream, balm or gel and comb through

2) Make sure your hair is completely dried before you start.

3) Beginning at the bottom of your head near your neck, section off the hair that falls on your back from the hair farther up on top of your head

with either a ponytail or clip (larger sections will take more time to flat iron and more passes over the hair to make it straight) Continue reading »

Most clients’ bangs grow out before the haircut does causing them tress duress. I like to show my clients how to do a home bang trim so they don’t butcher them. First I comb down the entire bang section, making sure to get all of the hair that is meant to be the bangs. Do this on dry hair only because wet hair will shrink when dry making the bangs much shorter than desired. Take each side of the bangs at the corners and gather them to the middle pinching them at the bridge of the nose. You now have a small point of hair that is the entire bang section that can be cut in one straight across small clip. Cut at the level of the bridge of the nose, any higher than this level may leave the hair too short. The bangs will fall longer at the sides of the face and slightly shorter in the center. I find this arching shape to be more pleasing than the straight across line look. For added texture and softness to the ends you can point cut an 1/8″ up to ½” into the ends closing the scissors as you pull away from the ends. This quick fix works well with practice and will get you through until you see your stylist again.

Straight, fine hair needs a bit of razor cutting or texturizing to achieve contour and body. Hairdresser Diane Jeep Ries shows you how to combine technique with free-form artistry.

This haircut will be based on a bob, but then updated using a technique called destructuring.

TOOLS – I’ll be using a thinning blade, texturizing or chunking shears, and a razor with a guard. The razor is only good for two haircuts. If used more, the hair may be damaged. Continue reading »

Perming and straightening are basically the same process: The hair is reshaped (put around rods or pulled straight with a comb), a reducing agent breaks down certain strong protein bonds (disulfide bonds) in the hair, and a neutralizer re-forms the bonds in the new shape, whether curly or straight. If you think this sounds drastic, you’re right — it’s the most damaging process of all and leaves your hair porous and prone to breakage. In fact, hair-product manufacturers and salon professionals will tell you never to perm or straighten hair that has been double processed or highlighted, and reputable professionals generally advise against using these processes on permanently colored hair.

Juliette Binoche’s elegant, ethereal beauty takes your breath away. Her dark smoldering eyes, porcelain skin and softly waved hair seem to belong to the classic style of Paris in the 1920s as much as to the modern world. If you love Juliette’s timeless style and you have short, layered hair, follow these simple steps from celebrity stylist Mario Russo of Salon Mario Russo in Boston to get the look

STEP 1 Wash your hair using a moisturizing shampoo. Follow with a hydrating conditioner. For extra shine, use cool water to rinse. Cooler water helps bring blood to the scalp to nourish hair follicles, and healthy follicles make the hair shine.

STEP 2 Gently towel dry the hair. Apply a moderate amount of body-building foam from the roots to the ends and comb through the hair to evenly distribute. Using your fingers, tousle the hair, placing it where you want it to fall. Let your hair air dry until it is about 70 percent finished. (Now might be a good time to have that extra cup of coffee or make those phone calls you’ve been putting off.)

STEP 3 With your hair is partially dry, finish the style using a blow dryer. Starting with one of the front side sections of hair, use your fingers as a kind of comb and work the hair in clockwise circle. Direct the dryer heat toward your hand more than the actual hair. This method allows your fingers to act as a diffuser, which protects the hair from heat and over-drying. After circling a few times, change hands and change the direction of the circle. Repeat this method for both sides of the head. The goal here is a very soft, tousled look. To dry the back of the head use the same technique. Be sure to give the hair a little extra lift at the crown.

STEP 4 To finish, emulsify a small amount of your favorite hand cream in the palms of your hands (you want just a residue of the lotion left on your hands). Work this through the hair to tame frizzies, and add softness and shine. Adjust the amount of lotion you use depending on the weight of your hair.

Julia Roberts does just what she wants. Never a slave to the latest style, she cuts her hair when others are growing theirs out and goes dark when everyone else is going blonde. And now, at a time when so many celebrities are wearing their hair stick-straight, Julia reemerges with a head full of soft, sexy curls. If you love her independent style as much as we do and you have chin-length, layered hair with at least a little natural wave, follow these simple steps from one of Julia’s favorite stylists, Antonio Prieto of the Antonio Preito Salon in New York City.

STEP 1 To maintain curls like these it’s important that you don’t over-wash your hair. Antonio suggests shampooing your hair only two times a week, but rinsing the hair well with water only on a daily basis. Over-washing can result in a depletion of the hair’s natural oils. Continue reading »
