Most professional men are looking for low maintenance hair color that looks natural. Here are some techniques for just that: Gray Blending.
Is there a way to soften gray hair without completely covering it up?
A reverse frost or low lighting process can soften the appearance of gray hair. A frosting cap or foil technique can be used. A reverse frost or low lighting can be achieved by selecting a shade close to the natural color.
Always follow manufacturers mixing and timing directions. Semi permanent hair color is an excellent choice when going darker, but when working on gray hair, always remember to use a neutral tone color or a neutral tone color in your formula.
Definition of gray blending: Those with 50% gray or less want to blend but not cover the gray completely. Softens gray and blends it in gently when using a shade that is lighter or similar to the natural shade. Adds richness and dimension without a heavy re-growth. Consider leaving some of the temple area gray—helps to keep the look very natural.
For those who want that I’ve just been to the beach look you might want to highlight. Here are some tips on highlighting short hair: Highlighting short hair is easy and fun.
Simply blow-dry the hair standing up as much as possible (you can apply a small amount of styling gel). Take your hair color or bleach on the end of a comb or on the tips of your gloved fingers and moisten the tips with color. Apply the color liberally so that the tips are moist with color and process until desired lightness is achieved.
Remember: Hair color does not remove hair color. If the hair has been colored treated, a bleaching product must be used.
Helpful Hints on the Frosting Cap:
1) A smaller crochet hook can be purchased at your local notion store. A smaller hook makes more delicate strands of highlights and puts a smaller hole in the frosting cap. If the holes from the hook are large the color or bleaching product may seep under the cap and create spots.
2) Before placing the frosting cap into the head, apply some silicone or silk protein shiner on the hair. This enables the strands of hair to be easily pulled through the holes in the cap. Before removing the cap or shampooing the bleaching product off the cap, rinse the hair clean (do not tangle) and apply conditioner and slide the cap off. Then proceed with shampoo and conditioner.
