A cool alternative to the, this season’s tucked tendrils come in several incarnations: classic French braids, tightly wound cornrows, or down-home Pippie Longstocking-inspired plaits-recently spotted on celebs Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman.
“Braids are an avant garde, fashion-forward look-ideal if you’re looking for a quick, funky style change,” says Kristina Poturica, the 1999 Manitoba Hairstylist of the Year, from Oxford’s Hair Design in Winnipeg. “They look great pinned on top of the head with little rhinestone bobby pins, or left down for a classic, simple look.”
Poturica says unlike the face-distorting styles mom created in grade school, braids looks best when plaited loosely. Hair should appear undone-stray ends and flyaway curls give braids a natural, lived-in look.
“Hair also looks really cool after braids have been removed, because it’s very messy and kinky,” Poturica says. “Muss it up with wax-based pomade or styling creme, and you have a whole different look.”
